The Bairrada wine region is geographically delimited to the south by the Mondego river, to the north by the Vouga river, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by the Buçaco and Caramulo mountains. This is a region rich in clay, and for its unique characteristics and indigenous grape varieties, its wines are one in a million due to their strong personality and genuine flavor.
Although mainly known for its red wine, white wine has been gaining importance in the region, mainly in the production of natural sparkling wines called “Espumante”, in which Bairrada was a pioneer in Portugal, and which are the ex-libris of this region.
Of all of Bairrada’s grape varieties, the predominant one is Baga, which produces intensely colored, full-bodied, tannins and a somewhat strong wine. Among the white grape varieties, the main one is Maria Gomes, which produces slightly acidic wines, with a pronounced aroma and softness.
“Bairrada is still a stage for the transformations that have taken place in Portugal. It sums up the same social vitality, identical natural potential, and a common vocation to discover and dream, all in a smaller size.
However, only a few manage to penetrate its secrets and enjoy all its enchantment.”
